Accepted research says, cognitively, that it takes us between 2 and 10 seconds to make a judgment, and this judgment is based primarily on visual impression. What impression does your company make during these few seconds?

With Facebook’s recent announcement last week about the rollout of Timeline for business pages, companies have until March 30 to brand or rebrand their Facebook page before Facebook forces existing content into the new Timeline format. Facebook launched Timeline so that business pages would be less of a secondary replication of a company’s web site and more of a place for them to tell their story and interact with fans.

The most obvious change with the new Timeline format is the addition of a large cover image. This is an opportunity to immediately showcase the personality of your brand. Other significant additions include the ability to “pin” a post, such as a valuable content item, and add significant milestones. Blending visuals, content and milestones work together to create a holistic story and a solid first impression for your business.

Beyond Facebook, where else are your prospects first introduced to your business? Take an inventory of these points of contact and ask yourself these four questions:

Does your business appear inviting on paper, on the web and in person?

Does your business appear to be knowledgeable enough to be problem-solvers?

Will others relate to your brand?

Are all of these entry points consistent in conveying the same first impression?

Consistency, even when making an introduction to a prospect is critical to your business success. Remember, you have just 2 to 10 seconds. Now go make a good first impression.

As was presented to the group on 3-8-12, here is a follow up and review of the concepts covered in the discussion.

The cashflow quadrant is from the book of the same name by Robert Kiyosaki. The top left is the “E” quadrant. This includes the folks who make money with a traditional job from the front line folks all the way to the CEO. Folks in this quadrant have the least duductions they can take and thus are the highest taxed folks. The arrow from the “E” Quadrant to the “I” Quadrant and Retirement is real and is done by saving some of your income every month until it builds up to be enough to live off of. This will take most middle class folks 40 years to do, but it can be doable for the disciplined savers because most middle class folks will work that long.

The problems come in the fact that the average time that a person working for a corporation stays in one job now is down under three years. Many folks have savings but end up having to use some to tide them over after a layoff. 401ks are helpful but most are in the stock market and are subject to wild swings in the market. The fact it there is a long list of items that can intefere with the 40 year savings plan.

And so many folks start making a move to the “S” (Small Business or Self Employed) quadrant (lower left) where they can be their own boss and prosper according to their own genius. Folks who start a business on the side operate in both “E” and “S”. The path from the “S” Quadrant to the “I” quardrant is real and very similar to the “E” to “I” path. It involves a disciplined savings plan that is allowed to build and compound without interruption. Problems that folks run into here are the cost of Health Insurance on individual plans, and the fact that many new businesses fail within the first five years. If the business succeeds however and the savings are consistent, then “I” can be achieved in maybe 30 years on up to 40.

Now on the right side of the model is where things start to get interesting. The “B” Quadrant is at the upper right. This is for Big Business but is generally the case where someone is paid a cut on the work of others. I gave my own business as an example. At Awesome Computer Help we have grown to the point where there is more business than one person can handle. To help I have marketing agreements with a few other Techs and they go and help out my customers (and find us new ones) and I receive a percentage of all of that business even though none of my time was used for those jobs. I would say I am still in the S quadrant at that small size, but as business increases and I have to bring on more Techs to handle it I am definitely moving towards the “B” quadrant. The keys for me getting myself fully into the “B” quadrant are marketing, leadership and personal development.

I mentioned Network Marketing at this point. There are some bad people in network marketing and also many good people not properly trained who leave bad impressions. The theory behind it is sound however. It is meant to provide a way for the “S” business to learn how to become a “B” without paying tens of thousands of dollars for the training that would be required through normal channels. That price is paid outside of Network Marketing in either training or failures. Both can be really expensive. Network marketing pays your upline to train you. They do not make much money on you unless you make a lot so they have the incentive to train you. Pick your upline very carefully, because if you do not like them it makes everything so much harder.

I did not mention any specific company names in my presentation. There are a few network marketers in the 290 group. In every Network Marketing company you would be selling something. The question to ask is what might you enjoy selling? The personal development opportunities in many of those companies are top notch, and as mentioned are free or very low cost. I credit professional development training that I received from Arbonne National Vice President Consultants for helping me to start and grow Awesome Computer Help. Arbonne was a business my wife was involved with a few years ago. I was not really even an active consultant but I benefitted greatly from the training, which I attended as often as I could.

Why do we care about moving from “S” to “B”? Because ultimately we need to get to “I” and the path from “B” to “I” can be only 5-10 years compared to 30 to 40 from the other quadrants. Also I pointed out that there was no clear way to go from “E” to “B”.

And so we end with “I”, which stands for “Investor”. This is a person who has money working for them enough so that they do not have to work. If you have seen the TV commercials where folks are carrying around big 7 digit numbers and calling them “my number”, the “I” quadrant is a similar concept. It is in this quadrant alone that one can truly “retire”. It is in this quadrant alone where folks have both money and the time to enjoy it. It is in this quadrant alone where people have true financial freedom.

So my humble suggestion is this. If you are on the “E” to “I” path or the “S” to “I” path and you are on schedule, then you are doing fine and only need to read the rest of this if you are wanting to go faster. If you are behind or do not feel like you are even on the path, then I recommend taking a hard look at how you can move from “S” to “B”. Of course you have to move to “S” first if you are starting at “E”, but most folks in the 290 Cypress BNG are in the “S” quadrant already. Something to ponder.

Oh, and when we are not discussing Income Strategies, we are also very good at fixing computers. This is Joseph from Awesome Computer Help, and we will stop “The Cloud” from raining on you.
